Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of strong, durable fibres that are fireproof and insulating. Its fibres can be hidden to the eye, moving in air for extended periods and being inhaled by humans, making it a highly hazardous material. In the past, it was employed in many forms to create building materials that were popular during the 40s – late 80s in Australian home constructions. Disposal of these materials has now been discontinued.
Roofing companies, as well as all involved staff and contractors, must hold a B grade licence in order to remove asbestos roofing (this is required by law). As a home owner, you are allowed to remove and dump 10m2 or less asbestos roofing, although an A grade licence is required for some other asbestos removal processes. If you do so, you should follow the removal safety guidelines.
